Captivating things to see and do in Hydra
Hydra is as peaceful as they come, offering a slice of tranquility in the Aegean Sea.

Where is the island of Hydra?

Located in the Aegean Sea, Hydra is part of the Saronic Islands of Greece. It’s situated between the Saronic and Argolic Gulf and gets its name from a serpent-like character in Greek mythology. Hydra is one of the final stops on the Classical Greece cruise, allowing you to explore everything this island has to offer.

One of Hydra’s unique characteristics is that it’s completely car-free. Wheeled vehicles – including motorbikes and bicycles – are banned, and transportation is only available on foot.

Hydra is a relatively small island, meaning you’ll have everything you need within walking distance. Hydra’s car-free rule preserves the island’s traditional charm, making it the perfect destination to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.

After walking through Hydra Town, you’ll climb the ascending trail to the Monastery of Prophet Elias, before reaching the mountain’s peak. From here, you can take in stunning views of Hydra and the sea below.

Along with its exciting activities, Hydra offers a range of fascinating landmarks and attractions. From its picturesque port to its historic castles, here are some of the sights you may not want to miss.

Hydra Town and Port

Wondering what to see in Hydra? Hydra Town is a great place to start. This is the island’s crowning jewel, home to elegant mansions, charming squares and traditional, whitewashed buildings. Once you’ve disembarked from your luxury yacht, you’ll walk along cobbled streets, which feels like stepping back in time. Loud car engines and horns aren’t heard here. Instead, you’ll be greeted by the hum of church bells and the sound of water gently slapping against the boats in the harbour.

Spend your time exploring the various art galleries and churches, flitting between the boutique shops and indulging in delicious Greek cuisine. Hydra Port is a relaxing spot to watch the world go by, with several cafés and restaurants dotted nearby to enjoy a bite to eat. Stop to watch the fishermen bring in the day’s catch and admire the glistening waterfront.

Cathedral of the Assumption

Situated close to the port, the Cathedral of the Assumption is Hydra’s most important church. Once a women-only monastery, this imposing three-domed basilica now houses the island’s town hall and the Religious Museum of Hydra, where you can view various artefacts and holy items. Explore Hydra’s rich history and witness the impressive marble bell towers – which can be heard ringing across the town.

Kavos Castle

Head to Kavos Castle in eastern Hydra Town – a spectacular fortress that overlooks the port and the glistening sea beneath. One of the castle’s key features is the statue of Andreas Miaoulis, a Greek naval officer who commanded forces during the Greek War of Independence. It also hosts various events, including theatrical sets and music performances during the Miaoulia Festival, a week dedicated to Admiral Miaoulis.

Lighthouse of Zourva

Built in 1883, the Lighthouse of Zourva is a remarkable structure situated at Hydra’s easternmost point. Destroyed by the Germans during World War II, it was rebuilt in 1946 and today stands at around 10-metres tall. This landmark makes an excellent destination for experienced hikers, offering magnificent sea views.

Take in the coastal view from your yacht

If unwinding on board is more your style, there’s plenty to do to occupy your time while soaking in the beautiful view of Hydra. Start your day with a stretch class on deck or select from a range of fitness classes. Alternatively, finish your day of exploring with a visit to the Elements Spa.

Indulge in delectable dining experiences and alfresco dining with a view at La Cucina. Savour the flavours of the region with local ingredients incorporated by your expert chefs. Satisfy your sweet tooth with fresh gelato at the Aqua Pool Café, before you head to the Sky Bar on the Sky Deck and take a dip in the Spa Pool while sipping your favourite cocktail.

Whether you choose to unwind from a comfortable chair on the deck, from the pool, or the comfort of your luxurious suite, there’s a view of the magnificent Hydra and the surrounding tranquil ocean from all angles.
