See Budapest in a day

As the largest city in Hungary, there is a lot to cover in Budapest, but it is possible to experience the best of what it has to offer in just one day. Below is a quick guide that could help if you are planning a short visit soon.

Buda and Pest

In 1873 Budapest became a single city, connecting the towns of Buda and Pest that were separated by the Danube. One of the key landmarks to visit during any stay in the capital is the iconic Széchenyi Chain Bridge, which was the first permanent stone bridge to connect the two parts. Pest is known as the more urban side of the city and provides the very best in traditional Budapest nightlife; the State Opera House is a must-see, known for its stunning architectural design as well as its unforgettable performances.

Castle District

As a UNESCO World Heritage site, there are many historic attractions to explore in the Castle District area of Buda. There is a great selection of things to do throughout the city, and the Castle District is a fine example, particularly if you are strapped for time and the weather in Budapest isn't too favourable. With wine tasting available in Buda Castle while you learn about its long history, it is a fantastic option if you are passing through the city on one of our river cruises in Europe and want to experience Budapest’s culture.

Széchenyi thermal bath

The Széchenyi medicinal bath is one of the largest in Europe and ranks among the most popular for its spectacular design. With 18 pools, 15 of which are fed by springs, it is used by locals and guests alike. Perfect any time of year, whether you’re warming up in the temperate outdoor pool as snow falls or feeling brave and stepping into the cold plunge pools, the Budapest baths should be at the top of everyone’s lists of things to do on a visit.

These are just a small selection of the great attractions Budapest has to offer its many visitors, and no matter if you are in Hungary’s grand capital for just a day or are able to stay longer, there will be no shortage of activities, sights and things to do there. Whether it is the city’s architecture, cuisine or views that interest you, there is something for everyone in Budapest to make you want to come back again and again.
