Cruise Director questions
We thought we’d ask Cruise Director Michael Ondrus what it is exactly that he loves about working for Emerald Cruises, and why he views river cruising as the best way to see Europe and Asia...
1. Where are you from?
2. How long have you worked for Emerald Cruises?
I joined Emerald Cruises in 2016.
3. How did you become a Cruise Director?
I started as a crew member many years ago and have taken on many different positions, making my way up. All experiences I gained helped me to understand the whole cruise ship operation. I have worked very hard and became a Cruise Director in 2012.
4. What are your main responsibilities?
My responsibilities are wide ranging. My main responsibility is to overview the whole cruise operation and make sure that our guests are having a great time! I’ll also plan the daily program, organise excursions, adjust sailing times, hold every day port talks and lectures, arrange the entertainment, and resolve any issues.
5. What do you enjoy most about your job?
I just love it. It is perfect job for me.
6. What’s the most challenging part of your job?
To be honest, I’m not sure. I love what I do so I try not to think of any part of it as being challenging.
7. Which is your favourite Emerald Cruises itinerary?
Splendours of Europe. Amsterdam to Budapest, five countries, three rivers, the Rhine, Main, Danube canal, beautiful places, small villages, bigger towns, but also three capital cities.
8. Which included excursion from this itinerary would you advise guests don’t miss?
Bamberg…it is so unique, with its beautiful architecture, original houses, the river flowing through the town and great stories from our guides. Not to mention, the free time to try the local smoked beer.
9. How would you best explain the river cruising experience to someone who has never tried it?
The best way you can travel in Europe and Asia. Unpack once and enjoy the best vacation of your life. Staying on a luxury floating hotel with friendly crew, delicious cuisine, included drinks and innovative Emerald Cruises features, like a pool and cinema. Everything is taken care of, from the time you leave your home until you come back.
River cruising is much more relaxing and much more intimate. Each group becomes almost like a family after a few days.
11. How do you relax while you’re on-board?
I like to watch the scenery during sailing times, watch movies in our cinema, or just talk and have fun with our guests.
