Creating an award-winning river cruise experience requires passion, dedication and expertise – qualities possessed by each and every member of the Emerald Cruises team. From our endlessly helpful call centre staff to our experienced Cruise Directors, we strive to make sure all our guests enjoy the holiday they deserve when travelling Europe’s timeless waterways with us.
Since we began offering cruises on the rivers of Europe in 2014, we’ve devoted ourselves to finding talented individuals with the passion and knowledge to make our river cruise offering a reality. We employ those with a genuine love, interest and curiosity for travel, who will go the extra mile to give our guests a unique and immersive river cruise experience.
We believe that by being transparent about how we make our river cruise holidays happen, our guests will have peace of mind that the enjoyment of their holiday is in good hands. That’s why we created our meet the team page, so you can find out more about the Emerald Cruises team, and gain valuable insight and top tips from the experts.
Here, we talk to Reservations Specialist, Sophie Pearson, about life at Emerald Cruises, and pick her brain for advice for first-time river cruisers.

Hi Sophie, thanks for talking to us. Could you tell us about your role within the Emerald Cruises team, how long you have worked for the company, and what your average day looks like?
I have worked within the Reservations Team for around 18 months now, and my average day usually entails being very busy on the phones speaking with our guests about new and existing bookings.
What do you enjoy most about working for Emerald Cruises?
I enjoy the fast-paced nature of working for Emerald Cruises and watching the company grow and develop. We have launched three new ships this year and it’s been so exciting to be a part of the build-up.
Have you had the opportunity to experience a Star-Ship? If so, which ships have you sailed on, and what were your first impressions/favourite features?
I have been lucky enough to experience Emerald Star and Emerald Dawn. I always love stepping on-board and being greeted by the spacious and modern reception area. One of my favourite features is the light fixture and how it is split across the three levels. It has the instant wow factor for me. One of my other favourites is the pool and cinema, I think it is really unique to Emerald Cruises and is such a beautiful and relaxing way to travel.
Do you have a favourite destination visited by the Emerald Cruises fleet?
One of my favourite destinations is Budapest because the architecture is stunning in every direction. In particular, the Parliament Building lit up at night is one of the most impressive things I have seen on my travels, it gave me goosebumps.
Which of the EmeraldPLUS and EmeraldACTIVE experiences appeal to you the most?
On our new itinerary, the Secrets of the Douro, you have the option to hike through the vineyards in Pinhão. I think this would be a great experience. The views in that area are spectacular and it would be wonderful to learn about the wine-growing region.
How has Emerald Cruises changed and evolved since you started working here?
Emerald Cruises has grown massively since I started here in April 2016. We have grown both in terms of staff and the number of ships in our fleet. When I started, we had four ships and now we are up to seven which is pretty impressive. I think Emerald Cruises has made a huge impression on the market as a new and innovative cruise company that can stand up well against its more long-standing competitors.
How do you see Emerald Cruises developing over the next five years?
I think Emerald Cruises will continue to grow. We have a high percentage of repeat bookers who, I think, will continue to travel with us due to our reputation. Having already won so many awards, I think we will continue in that direction. We’ve even branched out to Southeast Asia and Russia for 2018, and I’m confident we’ll succeed in these areas too.
If you could give first-time river cruisers one piece of advice, what would it be?
Grab a coffee and head to the Sun Deck to soak up the views and atmosphere. You are sailing through some of the most beautiful places in Europe, such as the World Heritage-listed Wachau Valley. Worry about photos later, but just take five minutes to really take it all in and appreciate your surroundings.
