Discover Emerald Cruises: A Q&A with David Winterton

At Emerald Cruises, we are immensely proud of the team we have amassed in the few years we have been operating. Highly professional and hugely passionate travel industry experts make up the Emerald Cruises family – from the digital team working on this website to the product managers putting together the itineraries we are so proud to offer.

Every member of the of our team has a slightly different set of responsibilities to help ensure that Emerald Cruises offers the finest river cruise experiences for every single one of our guests. And we believe it is interesting to get a little insight into their day-to-day life at Emerald Cruises, and how they enjoy working for the brand.

This is why we have developed the Discover Emerald Cruises series, a collection of Q&As delving into the world of our team members. Today, we’re chatting to David Winterton, our Global Brand Manager, about his role, his favourite Emerald Cruises experiences and much more.

Hi David, thank you for taking part in this instalment of Discover Emerald Cruises. Could you first tell us how you first came to work with Emerald Cruises, and how long you have been part of the team?

I’ve been lucky to be part of the Emerald Cruises team since we launched nearly four years ago now. I remember my first day very well as I was invited to take part in the christening of our very first ship. I flew to Amsterdam and watched Twiggy christen the Emerald Sky.

As Global Brand Manager, what is the main focus of your role? And what does your day-to-day working schedule look like?

Emerald Cruises has grown incredibly quickly, we now have seven Star-Ships and two specially chartered ships, with more ships in the planning. My key responsibility is to ensure we consistently deliver our fresh and innovative approach to river cruising during our guests’ journey with us. From the initial contact, right through to the on-board experience.

What first attracted you to Emerald Cruises? And what keeps you passionate about the brand and river cruising in general?

I first came in contact with Emerald Cruises at a cruise show in London’s Excel. I was working on a competitor’s stand and spotted the Emerald Cruises stand showcasing its unique indoor pool which magically turns in to a cinema at night. I thought “wow is that really a river ship?”

I love working for Emerald Cruises as it is such an exciting company with some great growth plans over the coming years.

How many Emerald Cruises river cruise itineraries have you travelled on? And out of those, which is your favourite, and why?

Part of my role involves ensuring the on-board experience is delivered to our high standards, therefore, I have been very lucky to travel on-board our ships quite often. I’ve sailed on all the rivers we travel along with the exception of the lower Danube (from Budapest to Bucharest) but that is definitely on my wish list.  Until recently, my favourite river was the Douro River in Portugal, due to its amazing picturesque river banks, valleys and, of course, the great Port. More recently I have travelled on the Emerald Liberté, our newest ship sailing along the Rhône River in France.  The small towns and villages that the cruise visits are gorgeous and are great places to sit and have a coffee, while you people watch.

Of all the complimentary Emerald Cruises excursions, activities and experiences, including EmeraldPLUS and EmeraldACTIVE, which appeals to you the most? And why?

Oh, I love all our included excursions, my three favourites are:

The night time cruise along the Danube in Budapest. The historic buildings and mighty bridges are all lit up and make for amazing pictures. Make sure you take a picture of the Hungarian Parliament Building, one of the best buildings I have ever seen.

The very pretty village of Dürnstein is often missed, as guests can choose to stay on board instead. My recommendation is to grab one of the on-board bikes and go for a ride along the river banks.

Melk Abbey. Towering over the Danube is this fantastic 900-year-old Benedictine abbey. Take a walk in the fine gardens and look down to the Danube and see the many river ships sailing past.

What does the future hold for Emerald Cruises?

Emerald Cruises has only just started to get going. The team is currently looking at where we can journey with our guests next. No river is off bounds, hopefully in the next few years we will see you on-board a ship in many new parts of the world.

We’d like to thank David for taking part in this Q&A, and hope you’ve enjoyed seeing Emerald Cruises from a different view. If you’d like to find out more about our luxury river cruises, visit the homepage or call us today on 855 444 0161 and our friendly team will be happy to help you.
